Monday musings

It’s a good thing most of my work for the semester is done.  What little I have left to do I’m not motivated to do at all, distracted by the sunny skies, glorious temperatures, and other little projects that have been put off.

I think I was in bed before 10pm on Friday night, still feeling the effects from the Cat Scratch Fever.  12 or so hours of sleep later, I felt much better in the morning.  I had started working on the quilt for my friend’s baby Friday, and Saturday realized I cut some of the pieces wrong.  I re-cut some, and then laid the scraps out in the correct pattern on the table.  It looked so cute!!  I was ready to sew.

My boy and I went up to North Alabama for his grandmother’s surprise 75th birthday party and other family visits.   I think she was surprised, so that was good.  I enjoyed some yummy fried shrimp, as I have discovered I’m good with about 1 or 2 bites of catfish.  My boy enjoyed telling all the native Alabamians about the $19 Catfish from Greensboro, Alabama we found in San Francisco, and getting the appropriate laughing response from them.

Sunday I was all set to start sewing the quilt…until I discovered that despite my many years of education, I can’t work a sewing machine.  I read the directions, I tried, I had everything threaded right…stupid piece of crap.  I don’t know what I was (or was not doing), the directions to the machine were terrible…it’s not my machine, it’s one on loan from a friend, so I finally gave up, figuring if I was going to break a machine, I shouldn’t break one that didn’t belong to me.  I think I actually stomped away from the project, muttering “I guess I’ll just have to be like an Amish grandmother and sew the damn thing by hand”.  Even I know this is not a good idea.

So I’m promised a lesson on Tuesday.  *sigh*  I’m so mad that I can’t figure out a simple piece of machinery.  What kind of special moron am I?

I traded on frustration for another as my boy and I headed out to the driving range.  :-D   (That was more a joking transition than true vent.)  It felt good to be back out swinging the clubs.  I slightly remember most of what I learned from my lessons in the fall.  I also remembered I am still owed a lesson, so I’ll be calling to collect on that.  I’m hoping we can make it out to the actual golf course later this week.  I hit some nice ones, and I hit some absolutely fantastically crappy ones.  Such is the game of golf.

So looking forward…only 2 more weeks left in the semester.  I have a presentation tomorrow, and then a couple of small things to hand in for another class.  I’m starting to gear up for my summer projects and plans – including, as of Thursday, a book chapter that I will now be writing with one of my professors.  I’m so excited – I get to write a book chapter!  I’m also proposing some ideas for another book, so hopefully I can get a chapter deal out of one of those proposals as well.

For now?

I’m going to take as much of a break from school as I can.

  1. I feel you on the sewing machine angst. With my background you’d think I’d be able to walk up to a machine and make anything work, but I can’t. All of them are slightly different, and some of them are just picky, tempermental little bastards. Show it who’s boss.

  2. 19 Dollars for CATFISH?
    Hilarious!

I can’t get the sewing machine started either.
I always ended up with a mess and gave up – last try when I was 15 ;)

Take your time and have a great break :D

  3. Not even going to bother with the sewing machine. I’d rather make a drive to Amish country and buy the blanket. :-) Never actually played golf. A friend took several of us to the driving range once. OMG I was so sore afterward. My husband is interested in playing again and says I should join him. It might be a plan…

Feel ya on the motivation factor. Five weeks until the end and I am counting.
