The ______ Excuse EVER.

I’ll let you fill in the blank for this one on your own, lest I cloud your judgment.

Last week, massive thunderstorms rolled in.  Remember, I discussed this last week: one girl cried.  Anyway.  Three students did not show on that day.  The next day, one asked if class was canceled.  I said no.  She said “Shit”.  The second girl emailed me – she’s in a wheelchair, and that’s a whole other story.  The third didn’t say anything.

Until Tuesday.

Are you ready?

She came up to me after class and said she needed to talk to me about the speech she missed.  Then she said “It’s kind of personal, I don’t want to say it with everyone here.”  Fine.  So we wait, and then in a hushed voice, she tells me she’s been having a lot of medical issues lately, including an overactive thyroid, which is why she looks like someone needs to force feed her.  She is quite skinny.  Not sure where this was going yet, I was about to tell her that if she had a doctor’s note, she’d be fine, but she started telling me that because of this, she’s dealing with some nasty problems, including one that caused her to miss class that day.

Are you sure you’re ready?

She missed class because her uterus is falling out.

I was torn…part of me wanted to hug her (because I do know that that is medically possible to happen to a woman) and part of me wanted to burst out laughing because my student just told me that she missed a speech because her uterus was falling out.

She did offer to share details if I wanted.  Needless to say, I declined.

Seriously.  Couldn’t make this up if I tried.

  1. I think I would push for a doctors note. It’s a sad deal, if it’s true, but there are so many bad jokes going through my head right now…
Hopefully you will get to the bottom of this soon, so that you can give her the grade she deserves. Period.

  2. Too funny. Although, maybe the real reasons are just too hard to admit to. Who knows.

  3. Yuck and awwww…. that is one good excuse though

  4. Oh my. Um…well…prolapse can happen, but a little strange if she hasn’t had children or pelvic surgery. Think I would have sympathy for her troubles but ask for the note. If you are going through something that serious and had to miss class, you have a note…at some point and time she has gone to the doctor, right? Must say, that’s a good one.

  5. Wow. That’s one of those things where it’s like what to do?!? I was going to say I’d ask for proof, but do doctors always give you proof? Sounds like she came with ammo though. Wow. Again, wow.

  6. Interesting. I did not know that could happen.

  7. I’m not even sure quite what to say here. Wow.

  8. Hmm, yea…I suppose she could be referring to a prolapsed uterus, but it usually happens after you’ve had children, are older, or had a difficult labor. I would be a bit suspicious too.

  9. Oh gosh – what an excuse……I sure would be suspicious…..!
The world is weird, I’m glad I can stay in hiding most of the time and don’t have to listen :)

  10. um. wow. i’m glad i’m not the one that has to make the decission on real or fake on this one.

sounds like it could be true, but it also sounds like this could have happened to someone else and she is just copying the symtoms.

ugh. if it is true, that is horrible. and i feel bad for judging her and the truth of the situation.

    wow. that sure is interesting.

about the girl crying… how did i miss that one?? anyway… i must say, I’m very proud of you for not laughing either, but honestly i’m cracking up right now about the whole thing. lol

have a great weekend if i don’t make it back here.

    xoxoxoxo
